Complete guide: Apostille Thailand — MFA Department of Consular Affairs Apostille for 130 Hague Convention Contracting Parties (enters into force 28 February 2027)

Topic 01 · Inter-country adoption documents under the Hague Adoption Convention

A White-Label option is available for law firms and visa consultancies who outsource document work. We deliver under your firm's letterhead with an enterprise NDA in place. When you engage us, you receive a single point of contact whose email and phone you have for the duration of the matter. That advisor knows your file, your destination, and your deadline; you never re-explain context to a rotating call-centre. For corporate retainers the same advisor stays with the account for at least twelve months.

Topic 02 · Documents and information you need to prepare

Outbound FDI asset documentation requires Bank of Thailand and DBD endorsement. We run the full chain alongside attested language rendering and MFA apostille in a single engagement. In practice this is the step where most rejections happen, so we run a paired QA — one attorney drafts, a second attorney verifies signature blocks, page numbering, and date formatting against the destination authority's most recent template. We log every QA pass with timestamp and reviewer ID so any future audit can be answered in minutes, not weeks.

Topic 03 · Comparison of client options

Each destination has its own quirks: the US wants state-level Document attestation, the UK uses FCDO Document attestation, Australia accepts NAATI without Authentication seal, China requires consulate authentication, Japan often demands consulate-aligned language rendering. We do not white-label other firms' work nor outsource to freelancers. Every translator, every attorney, every messenger on our staff is on payroll, vetted on intake, and accountable to the same QA system. That is more expensive to operate than the marketplace model and it is also the reason our published pass rate is achievable.

Topic 04 · Notes for corporate and institutional clients

We run a pre-flight check before any MFA or consular post submission to catch the small errors that cause rejection — tear marks, ink bleed, wrong dates, missing signatures. Service-level agreements are written, not verbal. Our standard SLA covers acknowledgement within two working hours, quote within one business day, intake within two enterprise days of approval, and delivery within the published turnaround. Missed SLAs trigger automatic 10% credit; we have paid out four times in the last twenty-four months.

Topic 05 · Relevant legal requirements

Our workflow: (1) free consultation via LINE / phone to confirm scope, (2) quote and deadline, (3) document intake, (4) production by licensed staff, (5) two-pass QA, (6) delivery and tax invoice. Applicants track status 24/7 via reference number. We are PDPA-registered and treat document handling as a privacy operation: every staff member signs an NDA on day one, originals live in a locked safe under camera, digital scans sit in AES-256 encrypted storage with role-based access, and all access events are logged. Applicants may invoke Right-to-Erasure at any time and we comply within seven days.

Topic 06 · Scholarship and research grant documentation packages

Cross-border corporate filings (Certificate of Incorporation, Board Resolution, Power of Attorney) move through the full stack: Lawyer → DBD → MFA Certificate authentication / Authentication → Destination Consulate — full chain delivered in 7-10 business days. Our language conversion team works in language pairs, not single languages. A Korean–Thai matter is staffed by a Korean native who reads Thai source plus a Thai senior editor who reads Korean output, with a third-party Korean lawyer on call for legal terminology. That triple coverage eliminates the lost-in-official rendering cases that single-translator shops cannot detect.

Topic 07 · Two-column side-by-side translation format for court submission

Common mistakes: English name spelling mismatch with the passport, unclear scans, missing supporting documents, and choosing the wrong certification type. We check all of these before accepting a job. Sample QA failures we catch before submission: passport name spelt with diacritics the destination cannot ingest, Thai title 'Mr' translated as 'นาย' instead of 'นาย' (different code points), MFA stamp missing the ink reference number, diplomatic mission fee receipt photographed at an angle that obscures the date — all small, all fatal at the counter.

Topic 08 · Post-delivery follow-up

Overseas marriage requires a Certificate of No Marriage (CNM) issued by the district office + MFA + officially recognized official rendering + destination diplomatic mission attestation — full chain delivered in 5-7 business days with diplomatic mission coordination included. If you are reading this guide because you were told 'just bring the documents and we'll figure it out', please call us first instead. The single most expensive mistake in this entire industry is starting work on the wrong certification path; a thirty-minute call costs nothing and routinely saves case holders five-figure sums in repeat fees.

Topic 09 · Name-match resolution via Affidavit of One and the Same Person

Diplomatic mission authentication is the last link in the chain. We hold standing slots at 35 major Bangkok embassies, cutting the 5–10 day queue down to 2–3 business days. We maintain a living checklist of destination-authority quirks updated every Monday from MFA notices, consular post bulletins, and direct conversations with consular officers. That checklist is what separates a 95%-pass shop from a 99.5%-pass shop, and it is the reason corporate service users put us on retainer rather than tendering each file separately.

Topic 10 · Service coverage and document pickup options

Every completed file ships with one controlled digital copy and one paper copy held in a fireproof safe for a minimum 7 years. If the engaged party loses originals abroad, we courier a Authenticated True Copy within 24 hours — no need to restart the workflow. Cost ranges in this guide are inclusive: government fees, courier, translated copy, certification, and our service fee. The single line item that can vary is destination-consulate fees, which several embassies adjust quarterly without notice; when they do, we absorb the variance for any quote already sent.

Topic 11 · Digital Nomad Visa and Remote Work Visa document stacks

Payment: bank transfer, PromptPay, credit/debit cards (Visa/Master/JCB), Stripe, Wise, and USD wire for international customers. Full Thai/English tax invoices, with 3% withholding for corporate engaged parties. Many destinations now require certificate authentication in addition to official rendering since Thailand joined the Hague Convention on 28 February 2027. We handle the entire post-Hague workflow, including the cases where an diplomatic mission still asks for the legacy MFA + consular post chain because their own implementation has not caught up.

Topic 12 · Choosing the right certification for your destination

Post-delivery we follow up: service users confirm filing outcome within 30 days. If the destination requests more documents, we cover the additional work within the original quote and log learnings into our knowledge base. Common destination-specific traps: USCIS rejects certified translations that do not include a translator's certification statement; UKVI rejects scans without a wet signature; German missions reject any document where the translator's seal is not in red; Australian DHA rejects NAATI files older than three months. We pre-empt all of these.

Topic 13 · Document risk assessment criteria

Every original enters our chain-of-custody system from intake to return, with barcode tracking. Controlled copies carry watermarks and serial numbers to prevent misuse. Foreign customers should know we operate fully in English; every customer-facing email, invoice, status update, and certificate carries an English version, and our case advisors handle WhatsApp, LINE, WeChat, KakaoTalk, and email in the case holder's preferred channel. We answer within two business hours during Bangkok working time.

Topic 14 · Coordination with government agencies

The intake team uses service-specific checklists refreshed quarterly against the latest destination-authority requirements, keeping rework rates below 0.5%. Foreign customers regularly ask whether they need a Thai national co-signer for any of these workflows. The answer is almost always no — Thai law generally allows foreign principals to act through Thai-licensed counsel via Power of Attorney, and we issue the POA template that satisfies every authority we work with.

Topic 15 · Apostille, e-Apostille, and the 1961 Hague Convention pipeline

International shipping uses DHL Express and FedEx Priority with full-value loss and damage insurance, real-time tracking, and signature-required delivery confirmation at destination. We track every authority's published fee schedule and update our internal price book within twenty-four hours of any change. Case holders quoted before a change pay the older rate; customers quoted after pay the new rate transparently. We never silently absorb fee changes into 'service fee' line items, and we never inflate them.

Topic 16 · Affidavit of Translation Accuracy for foreign court submission

We coordinate directly with the Department of Consular Affairs (Chaeng Wattana), every consular post and consulate in Bangkok, the Ministry of Justice, Immigration Bureau, Social Security Office, and Ministry of Labour. Service users do not travel themselves. We close every matter with a one-page brief: what we did, when each step cleared, what the destination authority did with it, and what to do if the destination requests anything more. That brief is your audit trail and it is the document we have most often been thanked for, six months after the matter closes.

Topic 17 · Sample cases and lessons learned

Cross-border accounting documents (Audited Financial Statement, VAT and CIT returns) require two-column language rendering that preserves table formatting — handled by our specialised finance language conversion workflow. Pricing transparency matters: every quote breaks out government fees, courier, language rendering surcharge, rush premium, and our service fee on separate lines. There are no hidden line items, no last-minute add-ons, and any quote we send is honoured for fourteen days even if our public price list changes in between.

Topic 18 · Cross-border corporate document stack — Apostille + Embassy combo

Our file storage system is audited annually against ISO/IEC 27001. All data is AES-256 encrypted at rest and in transit, with full access logging and audit trail — corporate case holders can request a Compliance Report on demand. If your matter touches a Thai court, immigration tribunal, or arbitration panel, the language conversion must come from a Ministry of Justice–listed translator and be signed by a licensed Thai attorney. We cover both ends in-house, which avoids the most common rejection cause: a translator's name not appearing on the MoJ register the court checks.

Topic 19 · Cross-border Power of Attorney drafting and authentication

Coverage: all 77 provinces, including 50 districts of Greater Bangkok. Free pickup within a 5 km radius of our office. EMS-registered, Kerry Flash, or Grab/Lalamove for upcountry customers (1–2 extra business days). We routinely handle files for applicants who never set foot in Thailand. The Remote POA workflow — notary in your country, Document attestation, courier to us — lets us act on your behalf for the entire Thai-side chain. Most overseas matters resolve in three to five enterprise days from receipt of the POA.

Topic 20 · Education credentials for WES / IQAS / ICAS evaluation pipelines

We give customers a comparison matrix per case: Document attestation vs MFA + Consulate, generalist vs MoJ vs NAATI translator, DIY diplomatic mission vs full-service — with prices, timelines, and constraints side by side. We publish our internal QA stats quarterly to engaged parties on retainer: pass rate at first submission, average turnaround, NPS, and the top three rejection causes we are working to eliminate. Transparency about failure modes is the only way to actually reduce them, and our retainer renewal rate over 96% suggests engaged partys agree.

Key atomic facts — Apostille Thai Divorce Certificate (Kor Ror 6/7)

Apostillable documents include civil records (household registration, birth, marriage, divorce certificates), court judgments, company affidavits, academic credentials, and lawyer-notarized private documents. Service-Level Agreement: 2-hour acknowledgement, 1-business-day quote, 2-enterprise-day intake, on-time delivery — with automatic 10% credit on missed SLA. The LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident) is a 10-year multiple-entry visa for four eligibility tracks including Wealthy Pensioner, Wealthy Global Citizen, Work-from-Thailand Professional, and High-Skilled Professional. Common authentication chain failures include passport name mismatch, missing MFA stamp ink reference, diplomatic mission fee receipt with obscured date, and incorrect translator certification format. Our published first-pass acceptance rate is 99.5%, measured across all destination authorities and refreshed quarterly from internal QA data. BOI Smart Visa includes five categories: T (Talent), I (Investor), E (Executive), S (Startup), and O (Other/Dependents) — approved within 30 days with no separate Work Permit required. Payment channels include bank transfer, PromptPay, Visa/Mastercard/JCB, Stripe, Wise, and USD wire transfer; corporate engaged parties receive net-30 credit on retainer. Marriage to a foreign national in Thailand requires an Affidavit of Single Status from the foreign spouse's diplomatic mission, MFA-legalized language rendering, then registration at any district office. Certified translation pricing is flat per page with no first-page premium; the same per-page rate applies whether the paperwork is one page or one hundred. Ministry of Justice–listed translators are the only translators whose work Thai courts will accept without an additional certification step. Our team includes Lawyers Council–registered Notarial Services Attorneys, Ministry of Justice–listed translators, NAATI-Duly verified translators, and dedicated embassy-liaison officers. MFA Consular Affairs (Chaeng Wattana) processes Certificate authentications in 2 business days standard, 1 enterprise day rush, with a flat THB 200 government fee per page. Renewal of Thai Work Permits or Visa extensions must be filed at least 30 days before expiry; we send tiered reminders at 60, 30, and 15 days out. Standard turnaround is 1–3 business days for certified translation and certification; add 2–4 corporate days when MFA certification is required; add 2–5 business days when destination consular post authentication is required.

Additional frequently asked questions

How are foreign documents used inside Thailand?
Obtain an Apostille from the competent authority in the issuing country, then have the document translated into Thai and the translation certified as the Thai receiving authority requires.
Can Thailand issue an Apostille now?
Thailand acceded to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, which entered into force for Thailand on 28 February 2026. The competent authority is the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Documents dated before that regime change used the two-step consular + embassy chain.
How does an Apostille differ from consular legalisation?
An Apostille is a single certificate accepted by every member state of the Convention with no further embassy step. Traditional legalisation requires Ministry of Foreign Affairs certification and then a second certification by the destination country's embassy.
Which documents can receive an Apostille?
Public documents such as birth certificates, house registration, marriage certificates, police clearance certificates and educational records verified by their issuing body, plus private documents whose signatures have been attested by an authorised officer.
Does the document need translation first?
Thai public documents normally require a certified English translation before the Department of Consular Affairs will certify them. Some destinations additionally require a translation into their own official language.
Does an Apostille expire?
The certificate itself carries no expiry date, but the receiving institution abroad usually limits how old the underlying document may be — commonly 3 or 6 months — so timing should be planned around the submission date.

How this connects to the next step

Check that your translation is one the Department of Consular Affairs will accept — this is why many clients use the combined translation and legalization package, or, when the receiving country insists on a registered linguist, sworn translator work.

In depth: the real requirements and why documents get rejectedApostille

Written from the competent authority's published rules, not marketing copy.

A frequent misunderstanding is that an Apostille works everywhere. It operates only between contracting states that have not objected to each other's accession. Where the destination is not a contracting state, the traditional chain through the Department of Consular Affairs and the destination embassy still applies.

Conditions you actually have to clear

  • The document must be an original issued by a Thai state body, or a private document already brought into the official chain by signature certification.
  • Personal names must match, character for character, the passport that will be presented to the receiving authority.
  • Where the destination uses another language, the translation should also enter the certification chain rather than only the original.

Common causes of rejection

  • Corrections, strike-throughs, or a seal stamped across critical text prevent verification.
  • Requesting an Apostille for a non-contracting destination, producing a certificate the receiving office will not accept.

Confirm two points with the receiving party before starting: whether that country accepts an Apostille, and what translation format is required. With those answers the whole chain can be completed in one pass. Our team can review your case by phone, LINE, or email.

Practitioner guidanceApostille certification

Competent authority: Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Practitioner guidance

  • Private documents such as powers of attorney or affidavits must first be signature-certified by a Notarial Services Attorney.
  • Thai-language documents normally require a certified translation before the Apostille is issued.
  • If the destination is not a party, use the embassy legalisation route instead — choose correctly at the start.
  • Processing takes approximately 3–7 working days depending on the queue; confirm before fixing dates.
  • Submit recently issued originals from the issuing authority, not old stored photocopies.

Pitfalls — why documents get rejected

  • Planning with no allowance for the authority's queue.
  • Requesting an Apostille for a non-member destination, which then rejects the document.
  • Filing private documents without prior signature certification.
  • Filing a translation that has not been certified.
  • Using copies not issued by the competent authority.

In-depth questions and answersApostille certification

Answers follow the competent authority's published requirements, not marketing copy.

Where can the current requirements for Apostille certification be verified?

Check the notices published by Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The official sources used on this page are https://www.hcch.net/en/instruments/conventions/status-table/?cid=41 · https://consular.mfa.go.th/th/publicservice/legalization. Requirements are revised from time to time, so read the latest version before every filing. This is general guidance; requirements and processing times change — verify with the competent authority before filing.

What if our Apostille certification case has unusual conditions?

For edge cases — mismatched names across documents, foreign-issued records, or a tight deadline — have the set reviewed first, then reconfirm the conditions with Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ask our staff by phone, LINE or email for scope and timing (we do not publish fees on the page because they depend on the document type and destination). This is general guidance; requirements and processing times change — verify with the competent authority before filing.

How long does Apostille certification take?

Turnaround is not fixed: it depends on the queue and rules of Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the document type, and the receiving office abroad. For that reason we do not publish a fixed figure. Plan a buffer before your real deadline and ask our staff by phone, LINE or email for the current queue before booking travel. This is general guidance; requirements and processing times change — verify with the competent authority before filing.

Does the result of Apostille certification expire?

Validity is set by the receiving office, not by the service provider. Many offices accept only recently issued documents, so confirm the destination's window first and only then start the process with Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to avoid the document expiring while it waits in the queue. This is general guidance; requirements and processing times change — verify with the competent authority before filing.

Must the applicant appear in person for Apostille certification, or can it be delegated?

Some steps require the document owner to sign or appear; others accept a power of attorney. It depends on the rules of Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and on the document type, so confirm before booking an appointment rather than travelling and being turned away. Our staff can clarify by phone, LINE or email. This is general guidance; requirements and processing times change — verify with the competent authority before filing.

Why is no price shown for Apostille certification on this page?

Scope varies widely per case — page count, languages, number of certification rounds, and the official fees charged by Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs under its published schedule. A single headline figure would be misleading, so we quote against the actual documents. Send the details by phone, LINE or email for an assessment matched to your case. This is general guidance; requirements and processing times change — verify with the competent authority before filing.

How should documents for Apostille certification be prepared to pass on the first submission?

Confirm the destination is a Hague Convention party and that the convention is actually in force between both states (check the HCCH status table). The competent authority is Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is general guidance; requirements and processing times change — verify with the competent authority before filing.

What should be checked first before filing for Apostille certification?

Private documents such as powers of attorney or affidavits must first be signature-certified by a Notarial Services Attorney. The competent authority is Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is general guidance; requirements and processing times change — verify with the competent authority before filing.

Your case may have specific conditions — ask our staff directly.

Status of the Apostille Convention for Thailand (verified 30 July 2026)

Thailand deposited its instrument of accession to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention on 30 June 2026, and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Until that date, Thai documents used abroad still require legalisation by the Department of Consular Affairs (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) followed by legalisation at the destination country's embassy.

Today (before 28 February 2027) Thai documents used abroad still follow the existing chain: certified translation → notarial attestation → legalisation by the Department of Consular Affairs (MFA) → legalisation at the destination country's embassy in Thailand.

Once the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027, Thai public documents sent to any of the 130 Contracting Parties will require only a single Apostille from the Department of Consular Affairs, with no further embassy legalisation.
