Legal framework for marrying in Malaysia with Thai-issued documents
Malaysia marriage registrars require foreign-national applicants to submit certified single-status, birth, and (if applicable) divorce or death certificates from their home country. For Thai-issued documents, the relevant authentication chain depends on Hague Convention membership.
Thailand acceded to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention on 25 Sep 2024 with entry into force on 15 Jan 2026. Malaysia is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so Thai documents still require the legacy two-step chain: MFA legalization followed by สถานทูตมาเลเซีย attestation.
